Getting around on a bus in Tromsø is a very simple experience, the Norwegians do public transport well. I used them multiple times on my visit, including an airport transfer. City buses are very clean and run to time, with a comparatively easy to read bus schedule. I get multiple questions on the best way to get around Tromsø, so In this article I will help you navigate how to plan the bus routes and bus tickets you will need to complete your arctic route, and ensure you’re not left stranded at the wrong bus stop!
Tromsø is the largest city in northern Norway and a lot of the locals use public transport themselves, so services run from early morning to late night. As you might expect local buses are also a cost effective way to traverse the “Paris of the north”. Several of the key sightseeing stops, including the arctic cathedral, are catered for on the routes.

Getting to and from Tromsø airport by bus
Tromsø’s main airport is located about 4 km from the city centre. The cheapest, convenient way to get from Tromsø airport to the city is by bus. You have two options:
Airport Express
- Time to central Tromsø: 15 minutes
- Costs 125NOK for a single ticket (200NOK Return) Purchase here
- First Bus 07:50am
- Last Bus 23:45
- Full timetable here
Local City Bus
- Time to central Tromsø: 16-25 minutes depending on bus
- Costs 50NOK for a single bus ticket. Purchase here, at ticket machines inside the airport or cash payment on the bus
- Bus stops are a few minutes walk across the car park
- Bus number 24, 40 or 42
- Full timetable here
Buses run every 15-30 minutes, so you won’t have to wait long. The Airport express is more spacious, so will be easier if you are travelling with big luggage or as a large group.
That being said, I got bus 40 back to the airport, outside of peak times, and I had space for my big suitcase. I strongly advise having your ticket purchased before you ride, we used the Svipper app linked on the website above. It makes a great way of saving time especially at peak times.
Some buses continue on to other destinations beyond the city centre if you are not staying centrally, ensure you check the route maps above.
I don’t want to get a bus from the airport – Taxi options
If you don’t like the idea of getting a bus into Tromsø with your bags, you can take a taxi from the airport to your final destination. Taxi fares start at around 200 NOK ($20 USD) for the 10-15 minute ride to Tromsø city centre. These fares are more expensive at weekends and at night, so bear that in mind.
There is a taxi rank outside the airport terminal or ride hailing apps (I used Uber on my arrival) are available throughout
Getting to and from Breivika Cruise port
If you haven’t arrived by plane there’s a good chance you have entered the arctic circle by boat. Cruise ships cater for bus travel into the city of Tromsø for Breivika port, with most services offering shuttle buses. If for some reason that isn’t an option for you the trusty number 42 bus also services the port.

Navigating Tromsø by City Bus
Once you’re in Tromsø, the city’s extensive bus network operated by Svipper is the best way to get around. The main bus terminal is located in the city centre, near the Stortorget square, which serves as a hub for most bus routes.
Buses in Tromsø generally run from around 7am to 11pm on weekdays, with reduced service on Sundays and public holidays. There is also a night bus service on Friday and Saturday night to selected parts of Tromsø. Both in winter season and midnight sun.
How do I buy my bus tickets?
Single tickets can be purchased from the driver (cash only), ticket machines or via the Svipper app (available on apple/android stores). Costs start around 50NOK for a single ticket. You can also buy day passes or multi-ride cards which offer more value for frequent travellers.
TOP TIP! The app is extremely easy to use, I highly recommend it. Failing that you can purchase tickets in these locations
The bus system covers the city centre as well as the surrounding neighbourhoods and suburbs. Popular destinations like the Fjellheisen cable car, Polaria aquarium, and the University of Tromsø are all easily accessible by bus.
Most city buses are accessible for wheelchair users. People can also bring bikes onto the service, something I saw several times when I was there, although there is an additional charge for this (20NOK adult bike, kids bikes FREE)
If you are planning on getting around Tromsø by bus a lot, consider looking into an area bus pass.

Regional Bus Services
In addition to the city bus network, Tromsø is connected to the surrounding region by a reliable network of regional buses. They depart from Prostneset, the main bus station located beside the Tromsø Tourist Information Office These buses provide service to towns and villages outside the immediate Tromsø area, excellent for those in search of outdoor activities but without a rental car! Perfect if you are northern lights hunting.
Regional bus routes connect Tromsø to destinations like Kvaløya (the large island just west of the city – Bus 420), Tromsø Ersfjordbotn (Bus 425), and even as far as Oldervik (Bus 450), an area with marked hiking trails, the Lyngen Alps and wonderful scenic views of the sea. Fares for these regional bus services vary depending on the distance travelled, but are generally affordable.

You can purchase tickets on the TROMS BILLETT app, or directly on the buses (again, cash only)
There is also the option to explore with the Arctic Route, environmentally travel options running multiple daily departures in peak Winter season (1st December – 31st March) and Summer season (15th June- 31st August).

TOP TIP! We used Uber a number of times, although expensive (everything in Norway is!) compared to the bus, it was very reliable and we never had a particularly long wait.
Regular taxi fares in Tromsø start at around 80 NOK for the initial pickup, plus an additional 20-30 NOK per kilometre. Prices may be higher at night or on weekends. While taxis provide convenience, they are generally more expensive than using the public bus system.
If you need to book a taxi in advance, there are several local companies you can call, such as Tromsø Taxi (+4703011) or Din Taxi (+4702045). They can provide set-price transfers, like from the airport to your hotel.
