Buckle up, fellow traveller, because I’m here to navigate you through the best transportation options – from the convenience of private transfers and the exclusivity of a private flight to the adventure of hopping on an ADO bus or taking the wheel of a rental car. Let’s make sure you land on this dreamy island with ease and style, ready to explore all its wonders.
Why Isla Holbox and what to expect
Tucked away in Quintana Roo, Holbox Island is a tranquil escape from the hustle of mainland Mexico. You will have heard about Isla Mujeres, the island of Holbox has all of the good qualities but with less of the crowds and more of it’s own added benefits.
This small island, part of the Yucatan Peninsula, offers a unique blend of serene beaches, vibrant wildlife, and a laid-back lifestyle, making it a significant destination for travellers seeking a quieter retreat. Holbox, pronounced “hol-bosh” to honor its Mayan roots, where “x” is said as “sh,” invites visitors into a slower pace of life, where the only tracks in the sand are those left by bare feet or bicycle tires.
Beyond its peaceful streets, Holbox dazzles with its natural beauty. The island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, home to flamingos, pelicans, and other exotic birds. Its waters are a sanctuary for whale sharks on their migratory route, offering an unforgettable experience for snorkelers and divers. At the right time of year and under the right conditions, Holbox is also a fantastic spot to see bioluminescent plankton. Turning the beach into a vibrant glowing blue and making you feel like you have superpowers when you swim in it! This was bucket list stuff for me and it didn’t disappoint.
At the quieter ends of the islands the air is fresh, the skies clear, and the nights peaceful, making it a perfect place for stargazing. Holbox’s commitment to preserving its natural and rustic charm while offering comfort and hospitality makes it an ideal destination for those looking to unwind in an unspoiled paradise.
Where to start?
Cancun International Airport is your first step, as it’s the nearest major gateway. You can either spend some time in Cancun or Playa Del Carmen first to explore, as I did and would recommend. Or you can head directly the airport.
From Cancun, you’ll journey to Chiquila, the critical launch point for ferries to Isla Holbox. This leg of your trip is where the adventure truly begins, setting the stage for the tranquil island that awaits. Whether you’re navigating the convenience of direct transport or soaking in the scenic route via public transport, reaching Chiquila is a necessary transition into the slower pace of Holbox. Below I will explore the 7 best ways to get to Holbox Island Mexico.
How far is Isla Holbox from Cancun?
Isla Holbox is approximately 87 miles (140 kilometers) from Cancun. The road to Chiquila, Holbox Island’s departure point, can be a bit of a haul, taking around two hours to navigate with a private transfer, as you cannot go as the crow flies. While the journey offers glimpses of the Yucatan Peninsula’s natural landscape, it’s not until you reach Chiquila port that the scenery truly captivates.
The best option for you is a matter of personal preference, balancing time and budget considerations. Opting for private transportation from Cancun to Isla Holbox offers the quickest route, saving valuable time. Cheaper alternatives may require waiting for buses or shared shuttles, which can significantly extend travel time.

- Inconvenience: The need to transfer buses can be inconvenient, especially for travellers with heavy luggage or those unfamiliar with navigating public transport systems.

- Luggage Allowance: You must ensure you consider the restrictions of the small plane. Flights Cancun allows for generous luggage allowances, permitting one suitcase of up to 55 pounds (25 kg) per person and one piece of hand luggage of up to 22 pounds (10 kg) per person. This shouldn’t be a problem for most having already had luggage limitations for reach Cancun International
The following options are commonplace in other areas you will travel, but one’s I do not consider to be particularly good ones when travelling to Holbox from Cancun or the surrounding areas.
Option 5 Private Car Hire to Isla Holbox
c.$30 (£24) a day including insurance
Pros:

Cons:
- Cost: There is little to no saving Vs the other options outlined. So even if you secure the best price you really have to feel strongly about wanting to drive yourself
- Vehicle Restrictions: Cars are not allowed on Holbox Island, so travellers will need to park their rental car in a paid parking lot near the dock in Chiquila, which adds an extra step to the journey.
- Inconvenience and cost of Car Parking: Although the parking lots at the ferry port are reliable and have security guards. You rely on spaces being available. There is also the added charge of 5-10USD per day parking fees.
Option 6 Taxi from Cancun to Chiquila Ferry Terminal
c.$175-250 (£160) one way
Pros:
- Convenience of door to door from the airport or your hotel with your luggage
- Efficiency: Takes the most direct route, minimizing travel time and potential delays.
- If you are not going direct from the airport, it could be a good option
Cons:
- If you are coming from the airport you will pay a premium. Only specific sanctioned taxis are allowed to enter the airport. This tax is passed down to you.
- Scamming has been widely reported by travellers. If you are going to take a taxi make sure you clearly agree a price before you set off. Many taxis in Mexico don’t have meters or don’t use them. You need to ensure you avoid a nasty surprise the other end
Option 7: Uber
I had no joy with Uber in my time in Cancun, here is the reason why. Using Uber can be challenging due to regulatory issues stemming from strong opposition by local taxi unions, leading to legal uncertainty and interruptions in service. Safety concerns persist, and language barriers may complicate communication between drivers and non-Spanish speaking travelers. Limited coverage areas and surge pricing during peak tourist seasons further add to the complexities of using Uber in Cancun. If you are successful in finding a car caution and awareness of local regulations are advised to ensure a smooth experience.
The Ferry to Isla Holbox
Congratulations you have made it to Chiquila. From here out everything is a lot more interesting and relaxing, unless you chose the private plane! There are two ferry companies that cross to Holbox Island every 30 minutes. The first ferry leaves at 6:00 am and the last at 9:30 pm (as of March 2024).
Passengers can board the ship a few minutes before departure. Luggage is loaded in the front, while passengers can board from the rear. The ship has an air-conditioned interior and an open upper deck. During bad weather, it’s advisable to stay inside. Alternatively, the top deck offers a beautiful view, but make sure you slap on enough sun cream as you don’t want the first thing on your itinerary to be sunburn.
Tickets for the ferries
It doesn’t matter if you take the Holbox Express or the 9 Hermanos ferry, the duration and the price are the same for both. It will just depend which half hour of the schedule you are closer to. Currently, the ticket costs 220 Mexican pesos (c.£10 or $13). The ferry ride is approximately 25 minutes.
You can buy the tickets directly at the pier counters next to the small supermarket. If you are traveling by ADO bus, it is also possible that tickets will be offered on the bus during the trip for the same price.
